What the tool supplies
Ollama's quickstart explains installing the runtime and starting a model conversation. It can be part of a larger setup with another interface or integration, but you can begin with the basic supported workflow. Ollama Documentation: Quickstart Guide
You still need to select a model. Different models have different capabilities, licenses, and resource requirements. Download size is not the only consideration; the working context and runtime also use memory. Start conservatively and increase complexity only when a real task requires it.
Try a simple extraction task
Use a short fictional service note containing a customer request, a date, and an unresolved question. Ask the local model to extract those fields without inventing missing information. Compare the result with the note yourself.
Extract the requested service, explicitly stated date, and unanswered question from this note. Return a short table. Use “not stated” for missing information. Do not infer personal details or add outside facts.
Record the response time and errors. Repeat with an ambiguous note and a longer note. This tells you more about the suitability of the model than a general conversation about its intelligence.
Check the actual data path
Ollama's FAQ distinguishes local use from cloud models and documents a local-only configuration. If offline operation matters, follow the current instructions and verify the selected configuration after downloading the required model. Ollama: FAQ and local-only operation
Also inspect any third-party interface you add. It may have its own storage, synchronization, or external connections. Keep the local service inaccessible to untrusted networks unless you deliberately configure and secure a broader deployment.
Decide whether to keep using it
A local model may be useful for repeated private text tasks, experimentation, or learning how the technology works. A hosted service may be more convenient or capable for other tasks. Compare the result, speed, maintenance effort, and cost with your actual needs.
Do not buy new hardware until a trial establishes the limitation you need to solve. Keep your notes and useful prompts in ordinary files. Update the runtime responsibly, retain a known working setup when a project depends on it, and check the license of each model before using or distributing it commercially.
