Understand the pieces

A runtime loads and runs the model. Model files contain its parameters. A chat interface provides the screen you use. Some packages combine these pieces, while others connect separate applications. Knowing which part is doing what helps you diagnose slow responses or an unexpected cloud connection.

Ollama documents local execution as well as optional cloud features. Its FAQ explains a local-only mode that disables cloud models and web search. That is a useful example of why installing software on your computer does not by itself establish that every request stays there. Ollama: FAQ and local-only operation

Match the task to the hardware

Start with a small, ordinary text task and a model suitable for your machine. Available system memory, graphics memory, model size, context length, and quantization affect speed and capacity. Quantization reduces the precision used to store model values and can reduce resource needs, with possible quality tradeoffs.

Do not buy expensive hardware because a video shows an impressive setup. First establish what you need to do and whether an existing machine can handle a smaller model. A local assistant that is adequate for classifying notes may be unsuitable for complex reasoning or large document analysis.

Run a controlled trial

Use non-sensitive sample text. Ask the model to summarize it and extract a few facts. Compare the output with the original and record response time. Repeat with a harder example. If offline use matters, confirm the chosen configuration works without internet access after required downloads are complete.

Summarize the supplied text in five sentences. Extract only the dates explicitly present. Mark missing dates as unknown. Do not use outside knowledge to fill gaps.

This kind of test reveals whether the model can perform your actual task. It is more useful than judging the model by a single entertaining conversation.

Think about maintenance and access

Keep the runtime updated and understand where it stores models and conversations. A local API should not be exposed to other machines or the internet casually. Check the licenses of the specific models you use, especially for redistribution or commercial work.

Local operation can improve control, but it transfers maintenance responsibility to you. Backups, device security, and any connected services still matter. Choose local AI when those tradeoffs serve a concrete need, not because the word “local” guarantees accuracy, privacy, or lower total cost in every situation.
