Start with the distinction
Microsoft's documentation distinguishes its consumer conversational app from Copilot experiences within Microsoft 365 apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription does not necessarily share every included AI benefit. Consult the current plan details for your account. Microsoft: Copilot for individuals
That naming distinction matters when following a tutorial. A video showing an assistant editing a Word document may not describe the standalone chat interface you have open. Confirm the application and account first, then choose an appropriate exercise.
Try improving a short document
Use a fictional meeting note or a non-sensitive draft. Ask for clearer organization, a brief opening summary, and a separate list of action items. If working inside an application, review the actual changes rather than accepting a conversational description of them.
Reorganize this meeting note into decisions, action items, owners, and open questions. Preserve all stated dates. Do not assign an owner when none is named. Keep the original meaning and identify any ambiguous commitment.
Check that tentative suggestions remain tentative. Confirm the names and dates. Save a copy before applying substantial changes so you can compare versions and recover material if needed.
Be more cautious with spreadsheets and messages
For a spreadsheet, ask the assistant to explain the formula and its assumptions. Test a known example and check ranges, units, and missing values. A neat table does not establish that the calculation is correct. For an email, inspect the recipient, attachments, and commitments before sending.
If a task needs access to a file or mailbox, verify the actual permissions. An assistant cannot safely infer every document you intended to include. Keep the scope of the task clear and distinguish reading, drafting, and changing information.
Decide whether the integration helps
The benefit may be less copying between applications, but that only matters if the final result is accurate and reviewable. Compare the completed task with your existing process. Include the time spent preparing the document and checking changes.
Consult current Microsoft instructions when the interface differs. Avoid buying a plan solely because a tutorial uses the same Copilot name. Establish that the specific feature you need is available to your account and useful for a recurring task.
