A sensible first use

GitHub's documentation describes code suggestions, chat, and development tasks that can include preparing changes for review. Different interfaces provide different capabilities. For a first project, use it to understand a small function or add a narrowly defined behavior. GitHub: What is GitHub Copilot?

You do not have to begin by generating an entire application. Ask what a function receives, what it returns, and where it might fail. Compare the explanation with the code. This develops your ability to judge later suggestions.

Try a bounded change

Choose a simple program that converts units or formats a list. Specify one missing behavior, such as handling an empty input. Ask for the smallest relevant change and a brief explanation of the reasoning.

Review this function for empty and invalid inputs. Explain the current behavior, propose the smallest change that meets these requirements, and identify examples I should test. Do not add a new dependency or change unrelated behavior without explaining why it is necessary.

Inspect the difference between the old and new versions. Run representative examples. For a calculation, verify at least one result independently. If the assistant reports that tests passed, check what was actually run and whether those checks cover the intended behavior.

Keep project boundaries clear

Use version control or a backup before significant edits. Keep secrets out of source files and prompts. Understand which repository and tools the assistant can access. Generating a patch is different from executing commands, pushing changes, or deploying a service.

When a task touches authentication, payments, private information, or production systems, bring appropriate expertise to the review. AI can propose plausible code that contains subtle defects. The harder the consequences are to reverse, the stronger the verification should be.

Evaluate the help you receive

Measure whether the assistant helps you understand and complete the task. A large amount of generated code can increase maintenance work. Prefer changes whose purpose you can explain and whose behavior you can test.

Check the current product documentation for supported editors, account limits, and data controls. Keep a short project README with setup and validation steps. A useful coding assistant should leave you with a more understandable project, not just a larger one that depends on continued guesswork.
