Three ideas to separate
An AI model is the underlying system that produces predictions or content. An application supplies the interface, file handling, search, and other tools around that model. An assistant may use several models or tools in the course of a task. This explains why two products using related technology can behave very differently.
Machine learning is a way to build models by learning patterns from examples. Generative AI produces new text, pictures, audio, or other content. Other AI systems classify messages, estimate demand, or identify unusual transactions. Google's introductory course explains these broader distinctions. Google: Introduction to machine learning
What makes it useful
Consider a club announcement. You already know the date, venue, cost, and purpose. AI can arrange those facts into a clear message, shorten it, or adapt it for a different audience. You can check every important detail. That is a more manageable first task than asking an unfamiliar system whether an investment or medical treatment is right for you.
A useful request supplies four things: the job, the facts, the constraints, and the desired output. The assistant should know whether you want a two-sentence answer, a comparison table, or a draft letter. Give it permission to say that essential information is missing.
Try a first conversation
Write five facts about a fictional neighborhood gathering. Ask for an invitation of fewer than 100 words. Then ask for a version that is easier to read aloud. Compare the versions with the original facts. If the assistant adds refreshments, parking, or a reservation deadline you never supplied, remove those inventions and point out the problem.
Write a friendly invitation using only these facts: Saturday, October 10; 2 p.m.; the community room; a discussion about family photography; no admission charge. Ask me for any essential missing information. Do not add promises or activities.
What an answer does not prove
A confident tone does not establish expertise. A list of links does not prove the links support the statements. An assistant saying it saved a file or booked something does not establish that an external action succeeded. Look for the actual file, source, or confirmation.
You do not need to decide whether a model truly understands language before using it thoughtfully. Judge a particular result: Is it correct enough for the job? Is it useful? Can you explain how you checked it? Keep your first successful prompt and the finished result together so you can repeat the exercise.
