What to use it for

Suitable first projects include rewriting an announcement, understanding a short document, planning an exercise in a new skill, or drafting a simple program. OpenAI's guidance describes starting from a goal and supplying relevant context, with tools such as files and search where available. OpenAI: Use ChatGPT — Official Learning Resources

Think of the conversation as a working session. You bring the purpose and approved facts; the assistant proposes a result. It may need a file or current source to answer correctly. A request to inspect a document is not enough if that document has not actually been supplied or made accessible.

Try a club announcement

Write five facts about a fictional event. Ask for a short email and a one-sentence reminder. State that dates, costs, and promises must not change. Read both versions against the original facts, then request a targeted revision if the tone or length is wrong.

Use these event facts to draft a friendly email for adults who are curious about AI. Keep it under 130 words. Explain that no technical background is required only if that is stated in the facts. Do not invent refreshments, parking, speakers, or registration requirements. List missing information separately.

The finished result should be ready for your review, not automatically sent. Save the approved version in an ordinary document. A reusable prompt plus a correct example is more valuable than a long conversation you cannot easily revisit.

Make the next request more specific

For a document comparison, specify the criteria and ask for supporting passages. For research, request sources and open the ones that determine the conclusion. For code, provide known inputs and expected outputs. For creative work, describe the final format and details that must remain exact.

If the assistant says it created a file, open the file. If it says a tool is unavailable, do not keep repeating the same instruction as if wording could grant access. Choose an available workflow or supply the missing material through an appropriate supported method.

Before relying on it

Check important facts and any external action. Review data controls and permissions before adding private records or connecting accounts. Do not assume another person's subscription or a podcast demonstration matches your account.

Begin with the access you already have and decide whether a paid feature solves a recurring need. This guide is a suggested workflow, not a claim that every feature was tested on every plan. Use the current official instructions when menus or capabilities differ from an example.
